Competition "Day Nursery in Burg-Hohenstein"

In 2001, the community of Burg Hohenstein invited five architecture bureaus for a competition to make design suggestions for a day nursery which was to accommodate a group of 20 children at a charming undeveloped real estate at the periphery of the town. There were no guidelines for the design by the awarding authority. 4 SENKRECHT won the competition and began to plan. The bureau has some experience in the field of the creation of day nurseries & nursery schools.
It is a great pity that after the finalisation of the bare brickwork the construction works had to stop, because the community did not have enough money to go on. So currently nobody knows when the work at the building will be definitely finished.

Design Idea

A both simple and classic design idea convinced the jury. The building is roughly formed as an "L" and tiled with two saddleback roofs oriented by the design of the surrounding buildings. Thereby we had the possibility to create a sheltered forecourt. The group room with its terrace is oriented towards the South with a splendid view down into the valley. As a special feature a part of the space under the roof construction is designed as a gallery for the children to play. Therefore the children get the feeling to be in a mysterious cave.
